It’s winter and my wardrobe has undergone its annual seasonal recycle. Here is a week of outfits for those who hate winter clothes/ lack inspiration as much as I do.
As you will soon be able to tell I am no stylist and definitely no model. I dress to my (low student) budget and am #1 fan of the plain coloured basics.
In every single outfit I am wearing this black singlet
(Glassons, $5- on special though woohoo) and these plain black ankle boots (Banks shoes, $125) which are pretty much the only shoes I ever wear.
Since my winter mantra to stay warm is ‘cover your ankles and cover your back’ they are my necessities and I love them. But anyway, read on for more clothes.
The start of the week also signifies the end of the weekend which to me is less than ideal. Outfits must reflect this day of mourning and new beginnings.
Tip: If all you wear is black (like me), avoid looking like the grim reaper by adding variation of colour, texture or shade. Even if it’s just a brooch or some lipstick; I was, typically, too lazy to wear make up in these photos but bright lips or smoky eyes are a stellar way to look like you have your life together on a Monday morning.
Listening to: House of the Rising Sun – Animals
(Tights – Glassons, $12), ( Turtleneck – The Warehouse, $15), (Shorts- IDEE, $45), (Cardigan – Glassons, $15), (Jacket – My aunty bought this for me a good for years ago from some boutique in Kerikeri (told you I was cheap)), (Brooch, Matchbox), (Necklace, Equip $6).
This is such a classic 2015 me look, I have only just graduated from wearing it seven days a week to wearing it occasionally. These elastic waist pants won my heart so much I own 3 pairs.
Tip: Layer, layer, layer layer.
Listening to: A Thousand Matches – Passenger
(Pants – Glassons, $25), (White top – Valleygirl, $5), (Cardigan – Glassons, $15), (Faux Fur Vest with belt – Valleygirl, $30), (Infinity Scarf – Glassons, $25), (Jacket – still that 4y/o classic).
It’s the middle of the week and I was too tired to wash my hair so it’s in plaits. That being said, Wednesday is a good time to wear colour and embrace positivity and productivity, you are half way to the weekend, things are looking good!
Tip: Never underestimate your cheap & easy basics. There are 1000x ways to wear a dress, also a plain pair of pants, also a simple top.
Listening to: Georgia – Vance Joy
(Tights – Glassons, $12), (Top – Glassons, $20), (Dress – Spacesuit, $65), (Necklace – handcrafted by my aunty, how good is that?), (Jacket – same old).
It’s Thursday! TIB, TIB, TIB! Hair is washed, coffee is consumed, things are good. Today is a monochrome day so it is a day to wear my fav textured layers.
Tip: Wear Black. In the words of my good friend c8lin, Thursdays in Black (TIB) is
“A uni student led, nationwide campaign against sexual violence. The central idea is to wear black on Thursdays as a sign of recognition and solidarity with sexual assault victims.”
All you have to do is say ‘no’ to an unsafe campus and wear black to show your support.
If you attend UoA there is a stall in the quad every Thursday with dope baking and free lollies, a good discussion group on fb, and many opportunities to learn more and become involved. For a gold coin donation you can also get a badge!
Listening to: Style – Taylor Swift (she is my favourite and that will never change)
(Pants – Glassons, $25), (Top – Dotti, $15), (Shawl – Market stall, $10), (Cardigan – Glassons, $15),(Jacket – was a present, thanks mum!), (TIB Badge – Campus, $1) .
It’s Friday!!! Outstanding. Today is a good time to relax so comfort is a main priority.
These two outfits are exactly the same vibe in different colours so I decided to chuck both into this post.
Tip: Dress for the weather but also dress for what you are doing. I live in the city and during my days I do a lot of walking but also a lot of bussing and crowding into lecture theatres. Everything I wear has to be warm, but it also needs to be easy to move in and quick to layer off if I’m inside.
Listening to: Friday I’m In love – The Cure, haha what a cheese.
(Tights – Glassons, $12), (Skirt – Admittedly mine is branded from Australia but you can get a black skirt for about $25 – $30 from Glassons or another chain), (Cardigan – Glassons, $15), (Infinity Scarf – Glassons, $25), (Top – Both knock offs, $15), (Jacket – Recycle Boutique, $15).
Saturday = Party Day.
Tip: Chainstores are ridiculously unethical but also ridiculously cheap. If you really are short on $$$ you can get a few goodies and despite rumours they do last at least a year of good wear. MAKE SURE TO TRY THINGS ON. Chainstores dupe ‘in fashion’ looks and they often exchange quality for weird cuts, angles and colours so shop with caution.
Listening To: Frankie Sinatra – The Avalanches.
(Tights – Glassons, $12), (Faux Fur Vest with belt – Valleygirl, $30), (Dress – Valleygirl, $9!!).
You’ve made it to the end of the week! Sunday is a good time to recover comfortably.
Fun fact: Someone was cleaning the driveway behind me when I took these dark photos and they were pleased to almost feature in this blog.
Tip: Monochrome always matches. Black singlets, shoes, and cardigans can all be worn with almost anything (as proved by me wearing all three all of the time) and are worth having.
Listening to: Romeo and Juliet – Dire Straights
(Cardigan – Glassons, $15), (Pants – Glassons, $25), (Top – Glassons, $20), (Necklace, Equip $6).
Congrats on surviving those cheesy poses, Talk soon xox
